I am going deaf. Last year I went on a course at Manchester Metropolitan University to learn to teach lip reading and gain a HE certificate in 'the teaching of speechreading' - as a trainer I was horrified - it was the worst course I have ever attended. The overall teaching was apauling; I received no feedback on any of my assignments until six months after the course ended - and that only because I made a fuss; the organiser was far from organised, losing things constantly and handing out confidential papers to the wrong people. And the students were sometime treated as cretins. The whole tenor of the course was negative. I would not recommend this course in any way. Oh, one consolation, one of the teachers, Mary, was excellent: she needed a medal to work in that atmosphere!
