As an aficionado of crafts I decided to look at doll making. there is a craze - mostly in America - of making dolls that look like new born babies. Well, what a can of worms - one can buy kits for making these dolls (at considerable expense) and making them requires a great amount of skill. But the kits are very expensive - £100 for some - and one can buy the bits and pieces separately for half that price if you intend to take the hobby seeriously. The can of worms - the people who buy these. yes there are those who genuinely collect dolls, but there are also those who use them as baby substitutes - or to get attention. Well - I guess they are serving a purpose in the same way as dogs do for those people who treat their pets as children.
